Turning Tide

© Hannah Phelps

You've been following this print for a few months now. At first, it was the yellow rectangles that kept ripping. Enough of them were intact for an edition, which is kinda nice.

One of them went along for the ride with Turbulence on Appledore when it was delivered to the Living with Craft exhibit at the 82nd Annual League of New Hampshire Craftsmen's Fair. It is headed to a show if its own - a showcase of printmaking in the Mount Sunapee lodge. The curator, Parker Potter, chose "Who We Are" as the theme this year. He told the artists to interpret it loosely -  traditional self-portraits weren't required to join in.

Without getting into a long discussion about self-portraits and what they mean (because this is a topic artists can spend days discussing), I chose to submit this brand new seascape. Rocks and waves are what I have focused on for years because the subject is very important to me. Much like the bug/windshield metaphor, sometimes I feel more rock and sometimes more water, neither inherently positive or negative.

This particular print began as a plein air painting last fall. As described in a previous post, high tide lingered longer than expected, allowing a little extra time to study the small breakers hitting these rocks. As a freshman Fair participant, everything is new and exciting and a tad scary. As a new member of the League, everything is changing, for good or ill. Just like the tide.
